Choosing a Scanner

Antennas
Choosing the correct antenna for your radio is just as important as properly programming your radio. Knowing what antenna you need is critical for optimal performance in radio reception. The antenna you need will depend on the frequency or frequencies you are listening to.

Encryption
Understanding audio and encryption is important: Full encryption means no scanner can hear the radio transmission. Partial encryption allows you to hear one side of the conversation, while with no encryption, all transmissions are audible. I can inform you if there's any form of encryption in your area if you provide your county, state, and city, township, or municipality. Scanner encryption blocks certain frequencies on police radio scanners, rendering them inaccessible to monitors. Most areas operate under partial encryption, where some frequencies are blocked but others remain open. However, in areas with full encryption, no scanner can monitor the radio communications at all.
